Located in the old city of Surat, Chevli Street is a sensitively designed private residence for the Architects’ parents. It is built on a small site of merely 100 square metres, with only a single frontage facing the street. Overcoming this site constraint, the four-storey dwelling is naturally lit through a pattern of skylights and stepped terraces creating a gentle downward trajectory of light. Along one wall is a concrete light shaft opened up by a skylight above. On the parallel wall, are a series of windows that allow this light to flood into the interior spaces. The internal palette is crafted with a blend of modern and traditional elements, creating a sheltered and inviting home for the family.
