Five dwellings are designed for a tight-knit family of five brothers with an emphasis on maintaining their close bond. Although the site is located in a rapidly expanding, new urban area of Surat, the clients desired a feeling of living in an old and traditional courtyard-house, a predominant typology in old Indian cities.

Each dwelling opens out to a courtyard that connects to the adjoining dwelling, creating an interesting play of solid and void. The courtyards are also a source of natural light and ventilation.

Although the design is based on the foundations of Indian vernacular architecture, the form and materiality embody a bold contemporary expression.
